Written Statement in Support of MD Legislation: Food Procurement – Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Official Statement Presented by CLF staff in support of Maryland bill titled “Food Procurement – Greenhouse Gas Emissions”. The bill would allow government-funded institutions to first track emissions associated with food procurement and to then reduce emissions through both food procurement shifts and reductions in wasted food. This statement summarizes literature that demonstrates how addressing food systems emissions is an untapped opportunity for significant climate mitigation. In addition, the statement provides evidence that incentivizing purchases of plant-based proteins, fruits, and vegetables can also benefit Maryland’s public health and economy.
