Center for a Livable Future Faculty Recognized for Excellence in Teaching in the First Term

With new commendations for excellence in teaching for seven CLF faculty and staff, the Center’s contributions to food systems education and training are once again highlighted

The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future’s (CLF)  Education & Training Program has grown steadily for nearly 30 years, through academic programs at Johns Hopkins University, educational outreach and training, and the development of educational tools and resources. This robust collection of offerings, which includes courses, certificate programs, an MPH concentration, doctoral fellowships, advising and mentoring capstones and practicums, online courses such as Coursera, a  food systems primer, and  FoodSpan, a free, downloadable curriculum.  

The Center’s education and training activities aim to advance a healthier, more equitable, and resilient food system, cultivate systems thinking and collaboration among students, educators, researchers, policymakers, advocacy organizations, and communities. Building the next generation of food systems experts is an essential piece of CLF’s mission, which it achieves through offerings designed for both students and professionals.  

In the first term of the 2025-2026 academic year, seven CLF staff and faculty achieved excellence in teaching Bloomberg School of Public Health courses that contribute to the knowledge base necessary for food system reform. Those recognized include Pamela Berg, Meghan Davis, Darriel Harris, Bob Lawrence, Sara Lupolt, Polly Walker, and Keeve Nachman. The courses were Introduction to Food Systems and Public Health (taught by Berg, Harris, Lawrence, Walker, and Nachman), Essentials of One Health (taught by Davis), and Introduction to the Risk Sciences and Public Policy (taught by Lupolt and Nachman).

During each term of the academic year, students from the Bloomberg School submit course evaluations in order to recognize outstanding faculty who have significantly contributed to their intellectual life through excellence in teaching. Honorees for this recognition have received an average score of 3.6 or above (on a four-point scale) in both the Overall Course and Overall Instructor categories of their student evaluations with a response rate of 70% or higher.
