Comment to Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee on Dietary Guidelines for Americans
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans play an important role in promoting health and informing policies and programs across the United States. In this written comment, CLF researchers provide input on the topics and questions that the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee explores in order to inform the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Recommendations include calling for further consideration of the relationship between diets high in processed and red meat and chronic disease health outcomes in the United States, particularly in comparison to dietary patterns rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and plant-based proteins. In addition, researchers call on the Dietary Guidelines Advisory committee to study the role of sustainable diets in assuring that all Americans have future access to healthy foods (including seafood). More general recommendations are made that call on the development of dietary guidelines that support healthy food access and address the root causes of diet-related health disparities and maintain the integrity of the Guidelines development process.
