Putting Public Health Practice into Action

By: Christine Grillo

On September 1, the Bloomberg School recognized several of its staff and faculty for driving positive change in public health through practice and action. Dean Keshia Pollack Porter and Assistant Dean for Practice and Training Beth Resnick recognized awardees in a ceremony that was followed by a viewing of plaques on display in the Dean’s Hall.

Several Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future team members were included among the awardees. Karen Bassarab was named a BSPH 2025–2026 Excellence in Public Health Practice awardee for her work on the Food Policy Networks project, transitioning it to be an independent national network and promoting community-based positive change.

CLF-Lerner Fellow Matty Aubourg and Affiliated Faculty Chris Heaney were also named Excellence in Public Health awardees for their team project in air pollution. The project yielded evidence that can be used to inform regulatory action on behalf of the residents of Baltimore’s Curtis Bay neighborhood, who live near a coal terminal.

“We all strive to put public health practice into action, and that’s really important to the School,” said Dean Pollack Porter. “Our winners exemplify the very best of this work.”

“We’re thrilled to celebrate them today,” she said, “and we are incredibly grateful for all that you do.”
