Francesca Schiaffino, DVM, is a second year doctoral student in the Department of International Health. Her dissertation research will explore antimicrobial usage among poultry farmers in the Peruvian Amazon, as well as the antimicrobial resistance patterns and transmission dynamics of Campylobacter spp. in this setting. This research will be carried out under the supervision of Dr. Margaret Kosek. In addition, Francesca is working with Dr. Robert H. Gilman’s research team to conduct antimicrobial resistance surveillance in wastewater treatment plants and sewage water in other parts of Peru, including peri-urban Lima and Piura. Francesca received her DVM from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, where she worked in the Infectious Disease Laboratory alongside Dr. Gilman, who serves as her current academic advisor.
