Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) at JHSPH
Mission accomplished! For the past 10 years, the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) has successfully organized and hosted a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project drop off site at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. We have long since achieved the primary goals of the project—to increase awareness of CSAs, to help students, staff, and faculty obtain fresh fruits and vegetables, and to provide an opportunity for members of our School community to engage with and support agricultural practices in our area that protect public health and the environment. With this wonderful 10-year-run in mind, we have now reached the point where it is time to end our CSA project at the School.
Through the tremendous support from our partners at One Straw Farm, a family-operated organic farm in White Hall, MD, the CSA project helped advance CLF’s mission and created opportunities for partnering with local organizations to address food insecurity within the community. Throughout the project, One Straw Farm donated one share for every 10 shares purchased, assisting Baltimore organizations like The Franciscan Center to provide emergency food assistance.
During the last two seasons, the Center has witnessed a decline in our CSA project participation, due largely to expanded––and for many, more convenient––pickup locations now available throughout the city. We are working with One Straw Farm to identify pickup locations near JHSPH to ensure that students, staff, and faculty can continue their CSA memberships directly with the farm.
We thank all of you who participated in the CSA over the years and, in particular, Joan and Drew Norman, owners of One Straw Farm for their continued support.
