20 Years of Meatless Monday
High-meat diets play a role in three high-profile public health crises: climate change, chronic disease, and the eroding effectiveness of antibiotics. For decades, the public health community has been calling for a reduction in meat consumption, and Meatless Monday may be the most well-known approach for shifting toward eating patterns that include more plants and less meat. Conceived by public health advocate Sid Lerner and launched in 2003, Meatless Monday began as a public health campaign in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Center for a Livable Future has provided technical assistance and scientific advice for 20 years. Read Dean Ellen MacKenzie’s statement on Meatless Monday’s 20th anniversary here.
