CLF Staff Contribute to Award-winning Book about Industrial Food Animal Production

A recently-released book on Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), featuring a chapter authored by CLF staff members, has won the prestigious 2011 Nautilus Gold Award for Conscious Media/Journalism/Investigative Reporting.  

span class="Body_Text">CAFO: The Tragedy of Industrial Animal Factories was produced by the Foundation for Deep Ecology and Watershed Media, and edited by Dan Imhoff, a publisher and writer of several environmental books. The Center for a Livable Future contributed the chapter, Antibiotic Drug Abuse, co-authored by Leo Horrigan, CLF Correspondent; Jay Graham, PhD, CLF Science Advisor and former CLF doctoral fellow; and Shawn McKenzie, CLF Associate Director.

The span class="Body_Text">Nautilus Awards recognize books that promote spiritual growth, conscious living and positive social change, while at the same time stimulating the imagination and offering the reader new possibilities for a better life and a better world. Fellow 2011 Nautilus Gold Award Winners include Prince Charles, Desmond Tutu, Maria Rodale and Jeremy Rifkin, as well as books put out by major publishers such as Penguin, Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins.

In addition to receiving the Nautilus Award, both CAFO and The CAFO Reader won span class="Body_Text">Independent Publisher Book Awards (known as “IPPYs”). The large-format photo book and the smaller reader were named Outstanding Books of the Year in the category “Most Likely to Save the Planet.”

The "IPPY" Awards, launched in 1996, are designed to bring increased recognition to the deserving but often unsung titles published by independent authors and publishers. The awards, open exclusively to independent authors, recognize 12 Outstanding Books of the Year and gold, silver and bronze medal winners in 69 categories. This year’s winners were selected from 3,907 entries.
