About Us

Our Mission
The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) aims to be a global leader in the application of science and systems thinking to build healthy, just, equitable, and sustainable food systems.
At CLF, we are staying the course in pursuit of our mission—but we also deliberately build upon our history, our strengths, and comparative advantages, and facilitate the integration of new and innovative approaches to foster real food system change.
Our Vision
Evoking founding director Bob Lawrence’s vision of a “Center without walls,” we recognize that the greatest potential for achieving CLF’s strategic goals will involve identifying new levers of system influence. In many cases, this means synergizing with scholars and advocates who use different tools to implement or generate shared initiatives for change. In some cases, this means tapping into the vast public health expertise at JHU and beyond. It also means reaching outside of the confines of public health to colleagues who use different tools (e.g., agroecology, economics, engineering, behavioral science, social design, political science) to build an evidence base in support of change.
Since its inception, a central focus of CLF’s work to change food systems has been industrial food animal production. The negative impacts of IFAP and the influential role it has long played in food systems provide a powerful rationale for CLF’s work to address the myriad systemic problems associated with that model and advancing more sustainable methods of food production. CLF understands that true transformation of our food systems cannot happen without moving away from industrial food animal production and the vast cropping system that enables it. This perspective guides our work.
Positive Change
By effecting positive change in food animal production methods, positive change will resonate throughout the supply chain, the greater food system, and society. Likewise, changing food system policy to support sustainable practices overall can also drive more sustainable practices to flourish in multiple parts of the food system—including food animal production. Changing food system governance and refocusing broader food and agricultural policy to prioritize the inclusion of ecological services can also help CLF in its mission, which is to advance a healthy, just, equitable, and sustainable food system.
Our History
The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) was born at the Bloomberg School of Public Health in 1996 as a first-of-its-kind academic center based within a school of public health and dedicated to being a global leader in the application of science and systems thinking to build a healthy, just, equitable and sustainable food system.
Our Work
The Center’s work comprises research, practice, education, public health policy and advocacy in four priority areas:
- Promote transitions to food production methods that support the health of people and the planet
- Align policies on food production and consumption for healthy diets
- Protect food system workers and communities most affected by food production practices
- Expand transparency around food system practices and their impacts
Visit our Public Health Agenda for Food Systems Change to learn more about our work in these areas.
