Yukyan Lam

Yukyan Lam, JD, is a fifth year doctoral student in the Department of International Health. She is interested in studying strategies for adapting food production to changing climatic and environmental conditions. The socio-political determinants and implications of such strategies are of particular concern. Her dissertation research is based in southwest coastal Bangladesh, and examines how fishing and farming households are responding to increasing soil and water salinity. As a CLF research assistant, she is investigating the industrialization of food animal production in low- and middle-income countries. Yukyan received her undergraduate degree in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her law degree from Harvard Law School. She conducted research and advocacy in Colombia and Brazil before starting her PhD, working with rural communities affected by large-scale development projects and conflicts over natural resources. Her advisors are Professors Pamela Surkan and Peter Winch, of the Social and Behavioral Interventions Program in the Department of International Health.
